Spices of Life

The earliest accounts of spice trade date back to Egyptian records of 2600 BC.

Today, two fi rms dominate the global spice industry while crops are generally grown by thousands of small scale farmers dispersed in remote areas. These farmers face unreliable income because of signifi cant fl uctuations in the prices they receive from buyers.

Fair Trade guarantees farmers a minimum price above the market price. In addition, women are paid equally to men and given power to negotiate in collective agreements among producers.
