Rice at a Price
Almost all the world’s rice is grown on small farms where it is planted by hand.
Recent trade liberalization regulations allow highly mechanized, subsidized rice from the USA and Europe into developing countries, threatening the livelihoods of the hundreds of millions farmers who depend on this crop for their survival.
International Fair Trade standards ensure that a minimum guaranteed price is paid directly to producer cooperatives comprised of family farms plus a premium for social initiatives.
